2 Kan: Tension or Complementary Power
Energy of the Day for September 29, 2025
The number 2 can represent duality, so today we might see both faces of the nawal Kan. One face is wise and noble, the other dark and manipulative. It is our choice which to embrace. However, each is equally available, but the consequences will be ours to deal with. –Mark Elmy

Kan: Associated with the mystical Feathered Serpent, Kukulkan or Quetzalcoatl, it is one of the most powerful day signs in the Cholq’ij.
As the Regent of the Sky and the Ruler of Time, Kan symbolizes the transformation of time, transcendence, peace, spiritual development and human evolution, and represents those predestined for spiritual vocations.
Yet it is also the lord of all material things and represents the concepts of work, autonomy, precaution, power, law, intelligence, and justice. As the nawal of education and training, it signifies the power that learning imparts to individuals and communities. [Kan] embodies a powerful connection with the inner fire, called koyopa among the Maya and kundalini in Eastern traditions. –Brigitte Rasine
Diana’s Observations:
Kan, the nawal of movement, life force, and evolutionary power, pairs with the dual potency of Power 2 today. As the bearer of truth and spiritual growth, Kan offers agility and the capacity to pierce illusions, turning knowledge into wisdom. 2’s presence weaves Kan’s serpentine awareness into the realms of partnership, choice, and mediation. On 2 Kan, advancement comes through embracing both tension and complementary action.
As we begin our journey through the fertile and accumulative weight of the K’at Trecena, 2 Kan calls for a measured approach in decision making—discerning what to hold on to versus what to release, developing strategy and the capacity to read and interpret circumstances before responding. In this cycle of gathering and evaluating, wisdom emerges through patience and thoughtful selection, reminding us that every thought and subsequent choice shapes the renewing fabric of our path.
As we navigate any complexities and tensions, Kan brings passion and vigor to managing the interplay of 2’s contrasts. Its energy suggests that disagreements or cooperation today inevitably lead to transmutation of stagnancy, or anything that limits our growth. Just as in nature, where Kan exists in the movement of air and water, the currents of this day begin to move us from one cycle to another, helping us integrate both peace and discord, the minute and the vast.
Kan invites us to listen deeply to our body’s signals, allowing it to guide our choices. 2’s interplay of duality calls for stillness and reflection—like a masterful chess player considering each move—so we may discern what brings more freedom and mutual harmony. Guided by K’at’s spirit of liberation, this is a day to gently loosen the knots that burden: honestly reexamining relationships, commitments, and patterns, while staying attuned to what is naturally being shed.

Snake Spirit Animal:
In the K’iche’ creation account, Q’uq’umatz is named as one of the two primary creator deities, the Framer and Shaper, who collaborate to bring the world out of the primordial sea and establish order. This association ties the snake to the very foundation of the cosmos and the principle of intelligent design.
The snake’s ability to move between the earth (coiled on the ground) and the sky (as the feathered serpent), makes it a supreme symbol of the axis mundi—the conduit connecting the underworld, the earth, and the heavens.
The snake’s ability to shed its skin makes it a universal symbol of rebirth, transformation, and regeneration, representing the cyclical nature of time and life’s renewal. The Maya elite often employed the Vision Serpent in bloodletting rituals as a spiritual portal, from whose mouth ancestors or gods emerged, reinforcing the snake’s role as a powerful intermediary to the spirit realm.
The Snake spirit animal can be invoked when one is undergoing a major life transformation and needs to shed old habits, ideas, or relationships that no longer serve their growth.
Observations by Mayan Spiritual Guides:
2 Kan
The energy of 2 Kan gives us the chance to gain wisdom from the duality of the world. It may be that the dark side of serpent energy has been employed to manipulate and seduce, its hypnotic ability pulling the unwary into its illusion. The number 2 makes it possible to see both sides, the truth and the falsehood, dispelling the illusion. It is time to see them for what they are and learn from them.
The nawal Kan highlights the life force energy that flows through us. Here we see it in combination with the number of relationships. It suggests that the energy of today may help to bring our a deeper wisdom through sharing our life force energy with our partner. –Mark Elmy2 Kan
On this cycle of 20 days of conformation of the energies that created the universe, today we receive the power of Ajaw 2 Kan.“On 2 Kan it happened that bad things arose and they could be seen in the eyes of people.” -Chilam B’alam de Chumayel, Mayan Yucatec Text.
The wisdom of Kan arises to remind us that we are more than a physical expression, we are energy. Kan tells us that as the energy we are we have the power to reach our highest potential.Kan is the one who teaches us that prayer can become a miracle, thought can become reality, knowledge can become wisdom, Kan is the ascension of things, it is the feathered serpent that emerges from the earth to reach the cosmic level.
Kan, who symbolizes the serpent, not only speaks to us of the power we have in our energy, movement, and action, but also teaches us that like the serpent we all have the power of transmutation, that we can shed the skin of our old patterns, of the feelings, thoughts, and beliefs that no longer contribute to our development, that we all have the ability and the power to transform ourselves. –Denise Barrios
