Special Edition: The 13 Sacred Tones of the Calendar

This article is the fruit of a journey I shared with you in ‘The Numbers Were Wrong’ — my public reckoning with what I had been teaching, and my commitment to get it right.

If you read that piece, you know that what I uncovered was not a small correction. It was a fundamental shift. And of everything that emerged from that process — all the hours of study, all the mythologies excavated — this is perhaps one of the most breathtaking pieces of understanding I brought home.

The 13 Numbers Are Lunar

In the sacred architecture of the Cholq’ij, nothing is arbitrary.

The 20 Name Nawales are Solar — the Divine Masculine, alive, generative, and felt with individual charge and character.

The 13 Numbers are the Lunar Counterparts — the Divine Feminine, cycling, gestating, materializing, nurturing, forming.

Together, they are the movement of vital spirit through matter.

The nawal is the rising Sun — it shows up as spirit holding the frame, naming the chapter. The number, the tone, is the orbiting Moon — a verb, a movement, the story detailing, animating, and materializing the picture as it unfolds on Earth.

Now seen whole, the two halves finally meet: every single day of the sacred calendar is a marriage — a unique union of the masculine and feminine principles, the solar and the lunar, the charge and movement — two living forces meeting in a singular moment of time, creating something that has never existed before and will not exist again for 260 days.

The Cholq’ij isn’t merely a calendar. It’s a living chronology of sacred union, endlessly turning, endlessly generating, endlessly whole.

And what better moment to share this than under today’s Full Flower Moon — arriving on 8 Kawoq, a ceremonial day on the White Road of the E’ Trecena.

It is on 8 days that the B’alameb — the four jaguar guardians of the four directions — come together with their feminine counterparts. A full moon. Four couples in sacred union. Days dedicated for ceremony and rites of passage.

As we near the 13th day of this E’ Trecena, on 13 K’at, let us keep in mind that the full moon, in the astro-mathematical language of the Cholq’ij, is the essence of 13: the crowning, the integration, the Grandmother fully illuminated.

Looking back on my 5-year study journey, the numbers were hidden and mysterious like the dark side of the moon, while the nawales were clear as day. And today, under the full moon, with you, I celebrate the numbers facing the Sun — clarified in my vision.

Preview: From Dark Moon to Full

I will now share with you a preview of the natural progressions I've fully laid out on my website. This is the arc of human development from the lens of the numbers — the stages of human development through the lunar nawales.

What follows is something I don't believe has been rendered quite this way in English before — the 13 Sacred Numbers of the Cholq'ij as a continuous, living progression.

Jun (1)

Before anything exists, there is this — the dark moon, the sacred union of the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine held in perfect stillness, the seed of all potential resting in the universal womb of the invisible.

In this Trecena, Jun arrived with E’ – the path and meaning.

Keb' (2)

Then comes the rupture — the birth, the cut, the first great sacrifice, the threshold that cannot be crossed without suffering and cannot be refused without ceasing to grow. A body tears open. Blood flows. New life enters. One becomes two.

In this Trecena, Keb’ arrived with Aj – the cornfield, its steward, and the force of renewal.

Oxib’ (3)

Then, the lungs fill for the first time. What was water becomes air. The newborn gasps, and something vast and invisible rushes in — the animating spirit, the breath of life, the world speaking directly into a brand new soul.

In this Trecena, Oxib’ arrived with I’x – the ferocity and creativity of the Jaguar.

Kajib’ (4)

The cosmos places its hand on the newborn soul and says: this is who you are. Space and time place a cross upon the being — the sacred quaternity — the four directions, the four planes, the four stages. It is the clarity and order of Q'ij — the Sun, the Day — making its defining imprint of that new human life.

In this Trecena, Kajib' arrived with Tz'ikin – the elevated vision of the bird.

Job’ (5)

A stone is pressed upon an ancient head. Job' is the moment ancestral memory crystallizes into matter — everything carried in the blood, the bone, the nervous system, the memory and invisible structures inherited from those who came before. The soul makes contact, for the first time, with the weight of its own genetic history. The new being receives the full inheritance of its lineage.

In this Trecena, Job' arrived with Ajmaq – introspective correction and forgiveness.

Waqib’ (6)

The growing being's ears, mind, and heart open as the world pours in — its winds, its rains, its divine transmissions, but also its noise. The soul is tender and permeable here, the sacred and the dissonant arriving together, asking to be felt and sorted. Waqib' is initiation into influence.

In this Trecena, Waqib’ arrived with No’j– the slow turning of knowledge into wisdom.

Wuqub’ (7)

Now the developing being's path turns inward. The Jaguar enters the night, moving through darkness with the confidence of one who does not need the light to know the way. This is not a loss of direction — it is the discovery of a deeper one.

In this Trecena, Wuqub’ arrived with Tijax – the surgical precision to heal.

Wajxaqib' (8)

In the depth of the forming being's interior, something is now discovered: a spark, beating in the heart, older than memory. This is the divine seed — the Maize Lord's sacred sacrifice made flesh, the prototype of the perfect human, the full potential of a life pressing outward like corn from dark soil toward its own magnificent multiplication.

In this Trecena, Wajxaqib' arrives now with Kawoq – rain, blessing, and community. Its turtle medicine aligns with this article's 13 moons — physically marked on its carapace. In the sacred mythology, the Maize Lord emerges from the cracked turtle shell.

Belejeb' (9)

From that divine spark, something stirs in the forming being — a recognition that there’s a magical intelligence at work far deeper than the mind can follow. Magic number 9. The serpent and the young Jaguar submerge in mystical waters, moving through a deeper knowing.

In this Trecena, Belejeb’ arrives tomorrow with Ajpu —the hunter, dancer, and victor.

Lajuj (10)

After the mystery — the developed being is initiated through the door of death. The circuit closes to reopen anew. Lajuj is the sacred dissolution — not destruction, but transformation — the evolutionary leap that becomes possible only when we stop gripping what has already finished and open our hands to what a great change is trying to deliver.

In this Trecena, Lajuj arrives with Imox – the secret waters of creative intelligence.

Julajuj (11)

The tested, and now initiated soul returns to the Earth — not as the tender seed of 1, but as one who has earned the staff of power. Julajuj is the channeling of terrestrial intelligence — the authority born of sacrifice and service on the material planes.

In this Trecena, Julajuj arrives with Iq’ – the wind stirring change and purification.

Kab’lajuj (12)

Holding the staff of power, Venus rises on the horizon of the developed being's journey. A harvest is now full and harmony is ready to be shared. Kab'lajuj is the ripening and expansion of all that has been planted, descended into, sacrificed, and endured — wisdom transformed at last into understanding and nourishment for others.

In this Trecena, Kab’lajuj arrives with Aq’ab’al – the rising dawn within, the twilight of inner-knowing.

Oxlajuj (13)

The Full Moon appears and the developed being is fully integrated in its light — as the Grandmother's face is completely illuminated, holding nothing back. Oxlajuj is the crowning — the total integration — elements woven together at last into the one thing the soul has always been moving toward: wholeness.

In this Trecena, Oxlajuj completes and integrates with K’at – the seed, the net, and the accumulated wealth of this cycle.

A Note on the Source & the Bridge

This progression was not invented — it was skillfully excavated.

As mentioned in “The Numbers Were Wrong”, the one who did that work, painstakingly and with great love over the course of decades, is Tat Juan Carlos Romero, Ajq’ij — a man who devoted his life to the intersection of epigraphy, archaeology, and Maya spiritual tradition. It is offered, here in my own words, in service of the lineage we’re both dedicated to restoring.
