Toj Glyph: The glyph represents a wheel and its axis. It represents Grandfather Sun and his strength. It is a circle, symbolizing the law of cause and effect. –Carlos Barrios
Toj represents the Sun and the essence of the sacred fire; purity, balance, and the transformative power to burn and transmute. As a teacher of causality and equilibrium, Toj illustrates the universal principle that every action has a cause and consequence. It embodies the concept of karma as a balancing force, highlighting the necessity of reciprocity and debt-clearing to ensure personal and collective harmony.
Toj is warmth, sensitivity and magnetism. Its anatomical link to the human ear signifies listening, helping, understanding, as well as prayers heard and answered. It invites gratitude for each day, and all of life’s blessings, reminding us that balance is sustained through mindful exchange and fulfillment is achieved through spiritual nourishment.
On Toj days, material and verbal offerings are made to Ajaw (God) in gratitude for personal, familial, and communal well-being, honoring life’s blessings and challenges, and to ask for healing and protection. –Diana P.
Today is Jun (1) Toj, kicking off a new Trecena (13-Day cycle theme) .
1 is birth and beginnings.
The energy of Toj is deeply rooted in listening, gratitude, cleansing, and spiritual transmutation. It’s a time to value reciprocity, reconcile debts with sincerity and humility, and bring balance to all aspects of life.
Building on the forgiveness from the previous Ajmaq Trecena, Toj encourages amending errors, atoning for unconscious actions, and replacing negativity with gratitude and good deeds.
This cycle promotes healing, protection and liberation through reciprocity, whether financial, moral, or personal. It invites us to acknowledge when to give and when to receive, cultivating vitality through equilibrium.
Toj emphasizes the importance of making offerings to God, the earth, ancestors, and spiritual guides. With intention, sensitivity and warmth, we can express gratitude for all that surrounds us in countless ways. –Diana Paez
Toj Mesoamerican Mythos [Excerpts]:
"The most fundamental of Mayan rituals is the Fire Ceremony. Tojil is the spirit of the sacred ceremonial fire and the deity who rules over the ritual flame. This is the fire of Ajaw; it is the Heart of Sky and the Heart of Earth.
The flames of the Fire Ceremony are pure. Other elements like earth, water, and air can become polluted by the unthinking actions of human beings, but fire always remains pure and is thus the perfect medium for burning away our misdeeds and our debts to the world.
Thus, Toj is the sign of offering. There are many offerings we can place in the sacred fire so that they can be consumed. Candles, incense, tobacco, flowers, liqueur, and sweet-smelling herbs may all be cast into the flames.
Our offerings are a kind of payment. When we pay our debts to the gods, we walk in balance once again. When we reach a point of equilibrium, we become truly free." -Kenneth Johnson, Daykeeper
"Offering is a beautiful act. Many times we only focus on the spiritual request, but what do we give back to Great Spirit, to the Great Mystery, to Mother Earth? It's good to give, it's good to watch over the good of what’s greater than us, for what we love." – J.A. López, aka Ocho Viento
